Course Description:
- The Unmanned Aircraft Systems course prepares students to fly drones under the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Part 107 Guidelines.
- Students get an overview of the national airspace system, FAA regulations, and the design and operation of small drones.
- Students monitor the weather, address the loading and performance of drones, collect data, and coordinate flight operation logistics.
- Students will use the Zephyr simulation software to practice flying.
- -This program is dual-enrolled with Virginia Peninsula Community College.
- Students can earn the 18-credit Career Studies Certificate in Unmanned Flight Systems.
- Students can compete in regional drone competitions.
STUDENT’S STUDY:
UMS 107 – Anyone flying a drone for business, commercial enterprise, or non- profit work needs to operate under Part 107 rules and must for a FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification. Students get an overview of the national airspace system, weather, FAA regulations and airport operations.
UMS 111 – Focuses on aspects of manual flight, and allows students to practice flying different drones in a variety of applications and locations.
UMS 177 – Prepares students to work with drones by building them from the base up. This enables students to see how different components work together.
UMS 211 – Learn how to program a drone for automated flight. Provides in- depth coverage of planning and completing autonomous missions.
UMS 295 – Drones for photography and videos. Applies principles of cinematography in photography and videography. Learn about frame rates, format, composition, rule of thirds, symmetry, and perspective. Students create a 1-minute reel using a drone and a portfolio of drone photos and videos.
UMS 195 – Mapping and surveying using drones. Students learn how to use advance software to create 3D models.
